Description

The flow visualization water tunnel (Eidetics 0710, Rolling Hills Research Corp.) is located in Flow Lab in the ENDEAVOR Lab at Oklahoma State University. This facility is a recirculating, open channel water tunnel that has a total nominal volume of 0.4 m3. The rectangular test section measures 457 mm (streamwise length), 187 mm (cross-stream width), and a variable depth that was is typically fixed at ~254 mm. The test section side walls are optically clear for 445 mm and 229 mm in the streamwise and vertical directions, respectively. Flow non-uniformities within the test section are minimized with the use of honeycomb, four sets of screens and a 5.6:1 area contraction upstream of the test section. The manufacturer specified turbulence intensity within the test section is <0.5% RMS. The tunnel is powered by a 1.1 kW 3-phase motor (1UTE, WEG) with a variable-frequency drive (M115SB, AC Tech), which controls a stainless steel centrifugal pump (369B-98, AMT). The tunnel water is typically particle filtered to ~5 μm (WHKF-DWHV, Whirlpool).
